Because you are literally helping us save lives. We focus on saving at-risk dogs, many of which are within 24 hours of being euthanized. It sucks but it’s the reality of rescue. Every foster we have to place a dog with is another dog’s life we can save. Fostering a dog that has known a rough start to life, and helping that dog come out of its shell and learn to really be a dog is one of the most rewarding feelings. To see a dog enjoy a toy for the first time or lay in the grass and soak up some sun and simply just be a dog is a feeling we can’t describe for you, it’s something you have to experience for yourself. <3
Fostering a rescue dog is probably one of the hardest and most rewarding things you will ever do.
Many of these pups come in off the streets or from homes where they were neglected and have never known love before. Many of them are also coming to you after being transported here from other states and feel unsure of what is going on.
We recommend giving your new foster time to decompress and adjust. Before bringing your foster dog home we recommend setting up a quiet and secluded place for them to settle in. We recommend a kennel, appropriate to your foster pups size (and maybe even a size up for extra wiggle room) with a blanket covering the kennel in a quiet room in your home with natural sunlight.
It may take 1-2 weeks for your foster dog to adjust (and some may find forever homes in this time period). It is our duty to give them the space and patience they need to adjust and to love them until they find their forever home.
Don’t get us wrong - sometimes you’ll also get happy-go-lucky pups ready to explore from the moment they hop off the transport van, but that is not usually the case. Even if your foster pup seems ready to go, these are likely all new experiences for them, please just keep that in mind. Fostering a rescue dog is a big responsibility, we will be here to support you every step of the way, but we do want to know you are committed to doing everything you can to keep this pup in your home until he or she finds their forever home. That may be three days or three months, you never know, and while we would never force you to keep a dog, we do strive to keep their transitions as stable as possible and that includes moving them from home to home as few times as possible.
We provide all medical care, food, and other necessary items that you’ll need to take good care of your foster pup. The only thing you’ll need to provide is time and a loving home! Fetch Foster and Rescue is a family, and we are all here to support one another and help each other out as we go. If you’re having a hard time with something-we’ve got your back.
Fosters are a HUGE part of what we do, and we always need more amazing fosters in our family. Is that you? If you still have questions - don’t hesitate to reach out! We can always be reached through fetchfosterandrescue@gmail.com or via our facebook page :)
